    A4TE was founded in 2024 as the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) and Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund (TLDEF), two long-time champions for the trans community, merged together as one organization.  A trans-led nonprofit, A4TE’s policy experts, litigators and community organizers work at all levels of government to fight for the legal and political rights of transgender people.

  • It Gets Better Project

    Created in response to the suicides of teenagers who were bullied for being gay or perceived to be gay, adults share their stories through videos, conveying the message to young people that life will improve.

  • Matthew Shepard Foundation

    Founded by Dennis and Judy Shepard in memory of their son Matthew, who was brutally attacked and left to die in 1982.  By amplifying Matthew’s story, the Foundation focuses on education, outreach and advocacy to create safer communities.  They support hate crime prevention training to law enforcement personnel and helped to pioneer the country’s first federal hate crimes legislation with the passing of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act in 2009.

    For families and youth who are transitioning, provides support groups, access to mental health care and educational programs.  Connects parents nationwide to provide mutual support.  Offers corporate training to create inclusive and affirming spaces.

  • Trans Youth Equality Foundation

    Advocates for transgender, gender non-conforming, non-binary and intersex youth ages 2–18. Offers yearly youth summer and fall camps, youth workshops, an educational podcast and training for educational and medical professionals.
